Let’s talk about Roku
It has been manufactured as part of a larger series of devices, for Roku. As a result, this is a Roku TV, but what does that mean for the average consumer? As many of you probably know, Roku has been in the media content business for years now with their Roku TV streaming box.
It’s safe to say that quite a bit of experience and mastery over what people want from a viewing session has been gathered in the process. Ultimately, having Roku supervise the creation of this device, not to mention directly influence it with the Roku interface is nothing but a big plus for the TCL 40S305.
The Roku Interface
The display comes with its own custom interface which characterizes Smart TVs. Basically, this helps turn the TV into a larger tablet of sorts. You will be able to browse the internet through an internet browser but also use third-party apps that are native to the TV, like Netflix, Amazon, and a lot more.
For more apps, all you have to do is download them onto your TV from the app store. This interface isn’t just for show, as it lets you organize, manage and view your content in a much cleaner and efficient way. You won’t spend any time looking for that show you’re trying to watch, or finding something better with just a few…remote taps?
Going fully mobile with TCL 40S305
If you’re going to navigate the internet on an oversized mobile device, why not go all the way and actually control the TV through the mobile app? You can download it on either Android or iOS. It definitely beats those remote taps, that’s for sure.
TCL 40S305 Specifications
The TV measures 40 inches which means that there is plenty of viewing room available. For some, 40 inches might be a little too much but following the “bigger and better” philosophy, it’s quite adequate for many cases. It weighs 14.6 lbs (6,6kg), 120 hertz refresh rate and it was released in 2017.
Its dimensions are (W x H x D): TV without stand: 36.3″ (92.2cm) x 21.1″ (53.6cm) x 2.9″ (6.4cm), TV with stand: 36.3″(92.2cm) x 23.4″(59.4cm) x 7.8″ (19.8cm)
Vesa Wall Mount Pattern (W x H): 3.937″ (10cm) x 3.937″(10cm)
Inputs: RF, 1 USB, 3 HDMI, Composite, Optical Audio Out, Headphone Jack
The TV uses direct-lit LED technology, which means that you’ll be watching an LCD panel with the crucial improvement of using LED backlight. This helps you get a much better image and a really nice tonality across the entire screen with proper colors and saturation levels.
The internet dilemma
Being a Smart TV and all, being able to connect to the internet is kind of an important feature. It takes center stage as a core component of the TV’s identity, and that’s why we’re disappointed with the fact that it does a poor job in this department.
To be more precise, connecting to the internet on the TCL 40S305 isn’t the most satisfying experience. Even the strongest internet connection might translate poorly to this Roku TV. It might say that it’s getting the full signal of your WiFI, but you probably won’t be able to feel it during use.
Overall, the TCL 40S305 is a solid device and as you can see from our review, there are plenty of reasons to go for this purchase. One of its few flaws is rather important depending on how much you actually use the internet on your TV. We can sweep it under the rug in favor of a good overall device at an advantageous price point. If you think you’d be better off searching some more, you could check out our comparison review.
